Shows, Articles Skyrocket Buffalo Into National Spotlight

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A cup of coffee from Public Espresso is about to get a bit more famous. That's because the coffee shop and two other start up businesses in the area are the latest to be featured on the next TV show that's putting Buffalo on a national stage.

"Everyone's really excited about new things coming to Buffalo and old things becoming new again. All of that excitement around it is really infectious,” said Public Espresso’s Co-Owner Sam Scarcello.

Crews were at Public Espresso's shop in the Hotel Lafayette Thursday morning filming Start Up, a popular program on PBS. Host Gary Bredow travels across the country to de-mystify entrepreneurship and the process of starting a small business. Alongside Public Espresso, City Dining Cards and Consumer Beverage's Craft Cruiser will also be featured on the show.

"Lot of similarities in these Rust Belt cities,” said Bradow. “There was a serious fall out and it left this blank canvas where people could come in and create. We're seeing that in Buffalo. It's extremely impressive."

Western New York has seen attention from HGTV's House Hunters as well, which recently showcased a Buffalo couple looking for their next home. Visit Buffalo Niagara President and CEO Patrick Kaler said they've helped put stories in some 101 media publications last year. Big names include The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Kaler added, "It’s a great opportunity for the Buffalo-Niagara region to have all of these new opportunities with TV shows, movies coming in to really showcase what's taking place in our destination with a lot of the rejuvenation in our downtown core."

"Being in the national spotlight gives us a chance to really showcase what kind of city we are and why it's a great place to live,” Scarcello explained.

Buffalo's episode of Start Up is expected to air sometime in the fall.
